The mission of the program is to provide an opportunity for low-income children living in Cambridge to become involved in the performing arts, including theater, dance, and music, with the goal of stimulating healthy growth and development of children through exposure to and participation in the performing arts. The program included daily theater classes for kids aged 4 through 13, including such activities as theater games, improvisation, puppet making, mask building, play writing, and many others. Each Friday, the children showcased what they had performed to other kids attending the camp; many parents also came each week to see their children perform in the shows. The program was a great success and we aim to build this program into a regular part of the summer and after-school programs at the Y. To see more photos from the 2009 summer camp, click here.
