The Longwood Players, Inc. is a nonprofit theatre company based in Boston, Massachusetts. The company began producing musicals in 1999, and we expanded our repertoire in 2003 to include a cabaret night and a dramatic production. The Longwood Players was incorporated in the state of Massachusetts in 2003. Our productions take place in Durrell Hall, a Victorian theatre (est. 1897) in the Cambridge Family YMCA. The Longwood Players is led by an Executive Board and an Advisory Board, which includes dedicated individuals who donate their time and talent to managing and growing the company.
Our members comprise individuals from all walks of life and include professionals and students from the Greater Boston area and beyond. Our members are diverse, and consist of long-time participants of community theatre, first-timers seeking a supportive artistic community, students of the dramatic arts, and even those headed for Broadway. Whatever your background or aspiration, we warmly welcome anyone with an interest in the art form of theatre to join our group. Indeed, participation in community theatre can take many shapes and forms. Please contact us at info@longwoodplayers.org to see how you can get involved.
The Longwood Players is approaching our 10th anniversary. We began in 1998 as a student group at Harvard University to provide graduate students and community members with an artistic outlet through the creation of musical theatrical productions. Our first musical production was Hair (1999). In 2002, it became clear that The Longwood Players belonged in the community setting, and the group incorporated as a nonprofit theatre company in 2003. Since its inception, we have produced 8 musicals, 4 dramas, and 5 cabarets (click here to learn more about our past productions). Our initial productions were held at the Massachusetts College of Art Tower Auditorium. Starting with our spring 2003 production of Cabaret, we have been performing at Durrell Hall, a beautifully renovated Victorian theatre in the Cambridge Family YMCA. Originally built in 1897, the theatre was shut down in the 1970s and reopened for theatrical performances with our production of Cabaret. The Longwood Players continues to perform in this beautiful theatre.
